Effects of Hearing Loss and Duration of Tinnitus on Tinnitus Handicap

Abstract
|
|
|
Objective: This study assessed the effects of hearing loss and duration of tinnitus on tinnitus handicap.
Method: Tinnitus handicap and audiometric tests were performed for 70 adults with tinnitus. Tinnitus handicap was measured using tinnitus handicap inventory (THI) for both 47 normal hearing and 23 hearing impaired subjects.
Results: The mean THI scores were 39.60 for the normal hearing group and 57.30 for hearing impaired group. The THI scores increased as the duration of tinnitus was getting longer. When the duration of tinnitus was greater than 10 years, however, the THI score was lower than the scores for the shorter duration.
Conclusion: These findings support that tinnitus handicap is influenced by the hearing loss as well as duration of tinnitus.
